Commemorative Commando March (Saturday 2 April)
The aim of the saturday Commando March is to commemoratie the wartime Commandos (and Rangers) who undertook their gruelling training at the CBTC at Achnacarry. A reconstruction, dressed in WW2 uniform with full kit, walking from Achnacarry to Spean Bridge (7 miles), as if they had just earned their Green Berets.
This year the march will be slightly different as previous years. We have added the Commando Trail, a kind of "battlefield tour" around Achnacarry Castle, showing several points of interest.
Around noon we will start the initial Commando March with a wreath laying ceremony at the Commando Memorial. We will end at the Spean Bridge Railwaystation and finishing the day off with a Traditional Scottish dinner, an auction and a sit in the Commando bar.
The Commemorative Commando March is open to all Commando and 29th Ranger re-enactors and veterans.
Commemorative Speedmarch (Sunday 3 April)
The aim of the sunday Speedmarch is to commemorate the original wartime Commando recruits and depot instructors of CBTC who regularly trained in speed marches along the very same route.
That route is from Spean Bridge Train Station to Achnacarry House, a distance of 7 miles.
The speedmarch is open to all applicants and offers two different entry categories.
• Battledress category: Speed marching the route in Ammo boots, BD's and rifle or equivalent weight (8lbs)
• Full Kit category: Ammo boots, BD's, full webbing, backpack or bergen and rifle or equivalent overall weight (30lbs)
Re-enactors are urged to wear WW2 BD's (or denims) and kit. This is not however expected for any other participants as long as they conform to basic requirements, ie. wear Army boots and carry the minimum weight for their registered category.
Small groups (likely 4 at a time) are set off with 5 minute intervals. (numbers in small groups departing and interval times subject to adjustment depending on how many participants we have)
Departure times recorded for all. Upon reaching Achnacarry House gates, arrival times recorded.
Immediately following arrival, all retire to Old Station Restaurant, Spean Bridge, for lunch and awards ceremony.
